When I Look at a Flower

When I Look at a Flower
By Josh Watkins

When I look at a flower,
I see more than just a flower.
I see beauty, peace, and creation,
I see life, a miracle, and God.

When I look at a sunrise,
I see more than just a sunrise.
I see warmth, comfort, and light,
I see a new start, a fresh day, and a wonder.

When I look at a river,
I see more than just a river.
I see diligence, steadiness, and calmness,
I see strength, perseverance, and a life's journey.

When I look at an ocean,
I see more than just an ocean.
I see harmony, will, and happiness,
I see endurance, freshness, and sweetness.

When I look at a sunset,
I see more than just a sunset.
I see rest, hope, and satisfaction,
I see greatness, and I see an end.

Here is my first attempt at free verse. I adore God's creation. The vast ocean's, the painted skies, the white-capped mountains, the luscious valleys, the fruited plains, and even the desert. Hence part of my desire to travel. I want to see it all, soak it all in, get lost the brilliance of His mind's eye.

We take so much of what we see every day for granted. But if you look deeper into each aspect of creation, you can find the simplicity of something so complex and truly appreciate the wonder and awe that came when Adam and Eve walked the Earth all those years ago.

My favorite part is the river. Rivers will appear in later pieces of work and for good reason. This verse shows my strong appreciation for rivers and their true nature. The time frame is still my sophomore year. I hope y'all enjoy this piece as much as I did writing it.
