Double Dose for being a Day Late
Smiles
By Josh Watkins
A smile can be many things,
It can be as bright as the sun or even a diamond ring.
They can be as long as a river or as short as an ant,
Even hold position when the mouth goes on a rant.
A smile can make someone's day,
Or even chase a cloudy mood away.
A smile can say "hello" or "how are you?''
One can even say "nice to meet you too!"
A smile can be as big as the as the sea,
Or as small as a bee.
Smiles can show affection and love,
And the biggest one comes from God above.
Smiles is the longest word with a mile in the middle,
They can even make a beginner play the fiddle.
Smiles are free, so don't save them,
To some, they are worth more than the most expensive gem.
So next time you see someone who is sad,
Give them a big smile to make them glad!
Who a Hero is
By Josh Watkins
A hero is not a man who flies,
Nor a man who always lies.
A hero is not super strong,
Nor a man who is always wrong.
A hero does not catch huge falling objects like planes,
Nor a man who kills himself to end his pains.
A hero is one who takes a bullet for a friend,
One who is there for him until then end.
A hero is one who jumps off a boat to save a stranger,
Not even caring about his own danger.
A hero is one who will run against cancer,
To save the life of a young dancer.
A hero is one who lives life freely,
Just an average person like you and me.
A hero is one who loves with a love that has no end,
And will stick by her side no matter what the bend.
That is who a hero is.
Sorry I'm a day behind. I was on the go all day and didn't get home until late. So these two short pieces were part of a trifecta that I had written all together in a period of half a week (the other was the flower poem).
Smiles came about from a sticker I had received from the dentist that read "Smiles are free, don't save them!" I also hate smiling for pictures because I adjust my mouth so many times and still feel as if the smile is goofy. My thought was with this one was to spread a happy emotion and to take something a simple as a smile and pull out its hidden treasures.
The hero piece came about after seeing a few articles and TV shows that showed ordinary people doing honorable things. Throughout my life, there have been the stories, cartoons, and movies of fictional superheros as well as normal people who have done extraordinary feats, but abuse drugs, alcohol, commit crimes, etc. I wanted to portray the real heroes. These people are police men, firefighters, nurses, doctors, and everyday ordinary people, who make great sacrifices for others. Example: The passengers of Flight 93 who overtook the terrorists and gave up their lives to save possibly hundreds to thousands of others. The soldiers who live in hell and are thousands of miles away from home to defend the homeland. The citizens of this great country who step in front of the gun, who chase after and take down the robber, who rescue the the pet in danger, who donate an organ to a stranger, who give their life for someone else. That's who a hero is.
